Jen ... jen ... is a correlative-style expression used to show alternation or variation: one moment/one part is like this, another moment/part is like that.
So here it means that the path is sometimes safe, sometimes dangerous or in some places safe, in other places dangerous, depending on context.
It does not simply mean and. It specifically suggests switching, contrast, or alternating conditions.
In Esperanto, when two descriptions apply in the same grammatical structure, you often use the verb just once:
La pado estas jen sekura, jen danĝera.
This is understood as:
- La pado estas sekura
- La pado estas danĝera
But the single estas covers both parts, which is more natural and efficient.
