Questions & Answers about Pódium je velké.

What part of speech is pódium, and what case is it in here?

Pódium is a noun. In this sentence, it is in the nominative singular, because it is the subject of the sentence — the thing being described as big.

What gender is pódium?

Pódium is neuter. A useful clue is its ending: many Czech nouns ending in -um are neuter, especially words borrowed from Latin or other languages.

That neuter gender is important because the adjective has to match it:

• velký = masculine
• velká = feminine
• velké = neuter

So with pódium, you get velké.

Why is it velké and not velký?

Because Czech adjectives must agree with the noun they describe in gender, number, and case.

Here:

• pódium = neuter, singular, nominative
• so the adjective must also be neuter singular nominative
• that gives velké

The dictionary form of the adjective is usually velký (big), but it changes depending on the noun:

• velký stůl = a big table
• velká škola = a big school
• velké pódium = a big stage/platform
