What form is "Reci," and why isn’t it spelled "Reći" here?
Reci is the 2nd person singular imperative of the verb reći “to say/tell.” The imperative is used for commands/requests: “Tell (me)…” The spelling difference is normal: the infinitive is reći (with ć), but the imperative is reci (with c). Plural/formal imperative: Recite. A common synonym is Kaži/Kažite (a bit more colloquial but standard).
Why is it mi and not “me”?
Croatian uses the dative case for the person being told. mi is the 1st person singular dative clitic “to me.” The pattern is: reći (kome?) (što?).
- Reci mi… = Tell me…
- Reci mu/joj… = Tell him/her…
- Reci nam/vam/im… = Tell us/you (pl.)/them… You wouldn’t use the accusative (me/mene) here.
Where does mi go in the sentence?
Clitics like mi prefer the second position in their clause. Here, Reci is the first stressed word, so we get Reci mi… (not Mi reci…). In longer sentences it still stays early:
- Molim te, reci mi odmah gdje je ključ.
- Polite question: Možete li mi reći gdje je ključ? (the clitic cluster sits right after li).
Should there be a comma before gdje?
No. In an indirect question functioning as an object, you don’t put a comma: Reci mi gdje je ključ. If you add a comma, you’re starting a separate direct question: Reci mi, gdje je ključ? = “Tell me, where is the key?” (different structure and intonation).
Why is it gdje je ključ and not gdje ključ je?
je (“is”) is a clitic and must be in second position within its clause. gdje is the first element, so je comes immediately after it: gdje je ključ. The variant gdje ključ je is ungrammatical in standard Croatian.
What does gdje mean compared to kamo and kuda?
- gdje = where (location, no movement): Gdje je ključ?
- kamo = to where (destination): Kamo si stavio ključ?
- kuda = which way/along what route: Kuda ideš? In everyday speech some people use gdje even with motion, but the distinctions above are the standard.
What exactly is je here?
je is the 3rd person singular present of biti “to be” (is). Don’t confuse it with the object pronoun je = “her” (accusative), as in Vidim je “I see her.” In gdje je ključ, it’s the verb “is.”
Can I split it into two sentences instead of embedding the question?
Yes:
- Reci mi gdje je ključ. = embedded (indirect) question.
- Reci mi. Gdje je ključ? or Reci mi, gdje je ključ? = two clauses, the second is a direct question. Both are natural; the embedded version is tighter and more neutral.
Is gdje ever written as gde?
In standard Croatian it’s gdje. gde is Serbian. You may also hear dialectal Croatian variants like di (Dalmatia) or gdi, but gdje is the standard form to learn.
How do I make this more polite or formal?
Use plural/polite forms or a modal question:

What case is ključ in, and why isn’t there an article?

Any pronunciation tips for the tricky parts?

- mi: mee.
- gdje: roughly g-dyeh; the dj coalesces to a single sound, similar to the “d+y” in “adieu.”

Is there any difference between Reci and Kaži?
Both work here: Reci mi gdje je ključ. / Kaži mi gdje je ključ. Many speakers feel kaži is a bit more colloquial; reci is neutral. The verb kazati (source of kaži) can sound slightly more formal in writing.
Should I end the sentence with a period, exclamation mark, or question mark?
Because the main clause is an imperative, use a period or an exclamation mark: Reci mi gdje je ključ. / Reci mi gdje je ključ! Use a question mark only if the second part is a direct question: Reci mi, gdje je ključ?
