What does Vi mean and when is it used?
Vi is the second-person plural pronoun in Croatian, equivalent to English you when addressing more than one person. It’s also used as a formal singular you when speaking politely to someone you don’t know well, to superiors, or in customer service.
Why is the verb biti conjugated as ste?
Ste is the present-tense form of the verb biti (to be) for vi. Croatian verbs change form to agree with the person and number of the subject. For singular informal you (ti), it would be si, but for vi it’s always ste in statements like Vi ste ovdje.
Could we use Ti si ovdje instead? When would we choose that?
Yes. Ti si ovdje means (informal) you are here and is used when speaking to one person you know well (family, friends). You choose ti/si for informal singular, and vi/ste for either plural or formal singular.
What does ovdje mean and how do we pronounce it?
