Why is it la taula and not el taula?

Because taula is a feminine singular noun in Catalan, so it takes the feminine singular definite article la.

la taula = the table
plural: les taules = the tables

A lot of Catalan nouns ending in -a are feminine, and taula is one of them.

The accent in és helps show that this is the verb form meaning is.
