Questions & Answers about Den Blick gesenkt, schaut sie auf die Karten.
Why is it Den Blick in the accusative case here, since there is no verb acting on it?
This is the Absolute Accusative (Absoluter Akkusativ). In German, you can combine an accusative noun phrase like Den Blick with a participle like gesenkt to describe an accompanying physical posture or circumstance. It acts as a concise mini-clause without needing a verb, similar to saying With her gaze lowered in English.
Why is the verb schaut placed immediately after the comma?
The entire absolute accusative phrase (Den Blick gesenkt) occupies the first position in the sentence. Because German main clauses strictly require the conjugated verb in the second position, schaut must come right after the comma, pushing the subject sie to the third position.
Why does auf take the accusative die Karten here instead of the dative?
When used with verbs of looking like schauen or blicken, the two-way preposition auf expresses the direction or target of the gaze, which triggers the accusative case. If you used the dative (auf den Karten), it would imply she is physically situated on top of the cards while looking.
Could I use a mit phrase instead of the Absolute Accusative here?
Yes! You could say Mit gesenktem Blick schaut sie auf die Karten. This uses mit plus the dative case and means the exact same thing. The Absolute Accusative is simply a more elegant, slightly more literary alternative for describing body language.
