Questions & Answers about Die Neulinge verstehen die Gefahr nicht.

Why does Neuling just take an -e in the plural here, and is it always masculine?

Yes, nouns ending in the suffix -ling (like der Neuling or der Feigling) are always masculine. They also have a very predictable plural: you simply add -e to the end, giving you die Neulinge. You never need to add an umlaut to the vowel for -ling plurals.

Why is nicht at the very end of the sentence instead of right after the verb verstehen?

In German, when you negate an action that involves a direct object with a definite article (like die Gefahr), the word nicht is placed after that direct object, often pushing it to the very end of the clause. Note that if the sentence had used an indefinite object ("a danger"), you would negate the noun directly using keine Gefahr instead of nicht.

What is the difference between der Neuling and der Anfänger?

While both can translate to "beginner," der Neuling specifically means "newcomer"—someone who is fresh to a particular environment, group, or situation. Der Anfänger, on the other hand, comes from the verb anfangen (to begin) and refers more to a novice who is just starting to learn a skill or activity.
