Questions & Answers about Der Dompteur nebst dem Direktor plant die nächste Vorstellung.
Two people are planning the show. Why is the verb plant in the singular instead of the plural planen?
Even though two people are involved, the grammatical subject of the sentence is only the singular Der Dompteur. The phrase nebst dem Direktor is a prepositional phrase, not a coordinating conjunction like und (and). Because the core subject is singular, the verb must be the singular plant.
Why is it dem Direktor here?
The preposition nebst (along with / together with) always requires the dative case. Because Direktor is a masculine noun, it must take the dative article dem.
Could I just say mit dem Direktor instead of nebst dem Direktor? What is the difference?
Yes, you could absolutely use mit (with) or zusammen mit (together with). Those are much more common in everyday speech. nebst is highly formal, slightly old-fashioned, and often used in official contexts, written literature, or formal announcements. It carries a subtle nuance of "inclusive of" or "along with" as an addition to the main subject.
The word Dompteur looks French. Does it follow normal German pronunciation rules?
