Questions & Answers about Sie findet, die Besetzung ist toll, auch wenn der Film kitschig ist.
Why is the verb ist in the second position in die Besetzung ist toll instead of at the end?
This is a subordinate clause where dass (that) has been dropped. After verbs expressing thoughts or speech like finden, you can omit dass. When you do this, the clause behaves like a normal main clause and uses Verb-Second (V2) word order, keeping ist in the second position.
How would the sentence look if I decided to keep the word dass?
It would be: Sie findet, dass die Besetzung toll ist. Adding dass turns it back into a standard subordinate clause, which forces the conjugated verb (ist) to the very end.
Why does the verb go to the end in the final clause, auch wenn der Film kitschig ist?
The phrase auch wenn (even if / even though) is a subordinating conjunction. Unlike the special case of dropping dass earlier in the sentence, regular subordinating conjunctions always kick the conjugated verb to the very end of their clause.
Can I drop dass after any verb, or only specific ones like finden?
You can generally only drop dass after verbs of thinking, saying, and feeling. Common examples include glauben (to believe), denken (to think), sagen (to say), and hoffen (to hope). You cannot drop it after verbs that do not express a statement or opinion.
Is the word kitschig used the same way we use 'cheesy' in English?
Yes, kitschig is the perfect translation for 'cheesy' or 'tacky' when talking about movies, art, or overly romantic situations. It comes from the same root as the English noun 'kitsch', but in German, it is heavily used as an everyday adjective to describe things that are too sentimental.
