Questions & Answers about Nimm bitte den Pfeffer!
Why is the verb Nimm instead of Nehme?
Nimm is the command form (imperative) of the verb nehmen (to take) when talking to one person informally. Because nehmen is a strong verb that changes its vowel from e to i in the du form (du nimmst), it keeps that i in the command form and simply drops the -st ending.
Why does the sentence start with the verb?
Just like in English, German commands usually start directly with the verb. Because you are telling someone to do something, the action word Nimm takes the very first position in the sentence.
Why is it den Pfeffer and not der Pfeffer?
The pepper is the direct object of the sentence because it is the thing being taken. That means it must be in the accusative case. Since Pfeffer is a masculine noun, its article changes from der to den in the accusative.
How would I say this to a stranger or in a formal setting?
The verb form Nimm is only used with people you call du (friends, family, kids). If you were speaking formally to a stranger or a boss, you would use the Sie command form and say Nehmen Sie bitte den Pfeffer!
