Why is it die Sonne (feminine) when the sun doesn't have a physical gender?
In German, grammatical gender doesn't always match physical gender or logic. You just have to memorize words with their articles. Interestingly, the sun is feminine (die Sonne) and the moon is masculine (der Mond), which often surprises English speakers!
Why doesn't gelb have an ending like gelbe to match the feminine noun die Sonne?
Adjectives in German only get an ending (like -e or -er) when they come directly before the noun they describe (like in die gelbe Sonne). Because gelb comes after the verb ist, it stays in its basic, unchanged dictionary form.
Does the b at the end of gelb sound like an English 'b'?
Not exactly! Because of a German pronunciation rule, a b, d, or g at the very end of a word hardens into a 'p', 't', or 'k' sound. So, gelb actually sounds more like 'gelp' when spoken out loud.
