Questions & Answers about Wir treiben zusammen Sport.
Why is the verb treiben used here instead of machen or tun?
In German, Sport treiben is a fixed, very common expression that means "to do sports" or "to work out." While you will also hear people say Sport machen, using treiben is the classic way to say it. Think of it as "to engage in sports."
Why does zusammen come before Sport? In English, we say "do sports together."
German word order differs a bit from English! In German, short adverbs that describe how you do something, like zusammen (together), usually come right before the direct object noun (Sport). So the sentence flows literally as "We do together sport."
Is Sport in the accusative case here?
Yes! It is the direct object (the thing receiving the action), so it is in the accusative case. Even though this lesson focuses on prepositions that force the accusative, action verbs like treiben also require their objects to be in the accusative. Because there is no article (like den) in front of Sport, the word just looks like its basic dictionary form.
Why isn't there an article like den before Sport?
Just like in English, when you talk about sports as a broad, general activity, you drop the article. You just say Sport treiben (to do sport), instead of adding words like "the" or "a."
