Questions & Answers about Er denkt an das Festival.
Why do we use an here when the English translation says "about"?
Many German verbs are permanently glued to a specific preposition, and they don't always match the English translations. The verb denken (to think) usually pairs with the preposition an. It is highly recommended to learn them together as a set phrase: denken an (to think of / to think about).
I learned earlier that an is a two-way preposition. Why is das Festival in the accusative case here?
You are right that an normally changes case depending on whether you are describing location or movement. However, when a two-way preposition is used as a fixed partner for a verb (like in denken an), the rule is simple: it almost always takes the accusative case. Since Festival is a neuter noun, its accusative form is just das.
Can I shorten an das in this sentence?
Yes, absolutely! In spoken and informal written German, an das is very often contracted to ans. It is completely natural to say Er denkt ans Festival.
Is it ever correct to say denken über?
Yes, but it changes the meaning! Use denken an when something is simply on your mind or you are remembering it. Use denken über when you are forming or asking for an opinion about something. For example, if you want to know someone's thoughts on the event, you would ask Was denkst du über das Festival? (What is your opinion on the festival?).
