Questions & Answers about Leider müssen wir die Hochzeit verschieben.
Why does the sentence say müssen wir instead of wir müssen?
Because the sentence starts with the adverb Leider (Unfortunately). In German, the conjugated verb (here, müssen) must almost always be in the second position of a main clause. When a word other than the subject takes the first position, the subject (wir) moves to right after the verb.
Why is verschieben at the very end of the sentence?
This sentence uses a modal verb, müssen (have to or must). When using a modal verb, the modal takes the second position and is conjugated, while the main action verb (verschieben) gets pushed to the very end of the sentence in its infinitive (unchanged dictionary) form.
Is die Hochzeit a combination of two separate words?
Yes! It is made up of hoch (high) and Zeit (time). A high time originally referred to any major festival or religious holiday, but today it is strictly used to mean a wedding.
Can I use verschieben to mean moving physical objects around too?
Yes! While in this sentence verschieben means to postpone or move an event to a different time, you can also use it for physically pushing or shifting an object from one place to another.
