Questions & Answers about Die Leute finden das Haus sehr schön.
Why does the verb finden have an -en ending here?
The subject of the sentence is die Leute (the people), which is plural. If you replaced it with a pronoun, you would use sie (they). In German, regular verbs for wir (we) and sie (they) end in -en. This means they look exactly like the dictionary form of the verb!
Is Leute always a plural word?
Yes! Die Leute means the people, and it is strictly a plural noun. It always takes a plural verb ending, just like the pronoun sie (they). If you want to talk about just one person, you have to use a completely different word, like die Person or der Mensch.
The house is the direct object receiving the action. Why is it das Haus and not den Haus?
The word for 'the' only changes to den if the noun is masculine (a der word). Because Haus is a neuter noun, it uses das. For neuter and feminine nouns, the word for 'the' stays exactly the same whether it is the subject or the direct object of the sentence.
Can finden be used for opinions in German, just like in English?
Yes, it works exactly the same way! You can use finden to mean physically finding a lost object, or to express your opinion about something, as in finding the house beautiful.
