Questions & Answers about Das Kind ist klein.
How would I change this to say 'A child is small' using our new vocabulary?
You would say Ein Kind ist klein. Because Kind is a neuter noun (which we can tell from the definite article das), the indefinite article for 'a' or 'an' in the nominative case is ein.
Why doesn't the word klein get an extra ending, like kleines?
When an adjective describes a noun but comes right after a verb like ist (is), it does not get an ending. It stays in its basic dictionary form. You only add endings when the adjective comes directly before the noun.
Why is Kind capitalized?
In German, every single noun (a word for a person, place, thing, or idea) is always capitalized, no matter where it appears in the sentence.
How is the 'd' at the end of Kind pronounced?
When the letter 'd' comes at the very end of a German word, it hardens and is pronounced like a crisp English 't'. So Kind sounds a bit like 'kint'.
