Questions & Answers about Sie ist die Frau.
Why does Sie mean "she" here, when it can also mean "they" or formal "you"?
You can tell by looking at the verb! The verb ist (is) is the form used for a single person, like "he", "she", or "it". If Sie meant "they" or the formal "you", the verb would be sind (are).
Why do we use die for "the" in this sentence?
In German, nouns have a grammatical gender. Frau (woman) is a feminine noun. When a feminine noun is the subject of the sentence, we use die for "the".
Is ist an irregular verb?
Yes! It comes from the verb sein (to be). Just like in English where we say "I am" but "she is", German changes the word completely. For er, sie, and es (he, she, it), the correct form is always ist.
Why is Frau capitalized at the end of the sentence?
In German, every single noun (a person, place, thing, or idea) is capitalized no matter where it appears in the sentence. Since Frau is a noun, it always gets a capital letter.
