sehen and blicken can be synonyms, but they are not always.They both mean to look
Often blicken is a little shorter than sehen but that is not absolute.
However looking at or for something doesn't mean that you actually see it... and here comes the difference between the two words.
blicken doesn't mean to (be able to) see/to distinguish - you need sehen for this
