Usages of essen

Let's try to use from now on the 'ß' for the double s- that's part of the fun.

btw. you can't use it in the word 'essen'. because the 2 s are not in the same syllable. You say 'es- sen'.

Er ißt sein Frühstück.

He eats his breakfast.

Dann geht er essen.

Then he goes to eat.

Er ißt sein Mittagessen.

He eats his lunch.

Er ißt sein Mittagessen in der Kantine.

He eats his lunch in the canteen.

In the morning I eat bread with cheese.

Mittags esse ich in der Kantine.

Abends esse ich Käse mit Brot.

In the evening I eat cheese with bread.

Ich esse allein Frühstück.

I eat breakfast alone.

Ich esse allein in der Kantine.

I eat alone in the canteen.

Ich esse allein Abendbrot.

I eat supper alone.

Remember: ss in 1 syllable = ß >ißt
ss in 2 syllables = ss > es-se

Ich esse Brot und Käse.

Ich esse zuhause.

Ich esse abends.

Ich esse, weil ich Hunger habe.

Ich esse, weil ich Hunger habe.

I eat, because I am hungry.

Ich esse morgens.

Ich esse, weil ich Brot habe.

I eat the same as yesterday. ^{I cooked the same dish again.}

Sie ißt das Brot.

She eats the bread.

I guess we use more often 'Brot' without article, since generally 'das Brot' refers to a whole loaf of bread.

It can however also refer to a specific slice of bread, we talked about. The bread I made for her, the bread next to her plate ...

Then again in spoken language you would rather use a local dialect word for the slice of bread, as 'Stulle' (Berlin), Schnitte (Northern Germany),Bemme (Sachsen), Butterschmier (Saarland), Bütterken (Lower Rhein), Knifte (a bit more to the west), Donge (at the border to Rheinland Pfalz)...

Don't kill yourself by trying to memorize all those. I myself just knew about 2 of them :D

Ich esse die Pizza nicht.

I don't eat the pizza.

Ich esse das nicht.

I don't eat that.

Die Frau ißt den Apfel.

The woman eats the apple.

Die Frau ißt einen Apfel.

The woman eats an apple.

Der Mann ißt die Banane.

The man eats the banana.

Der Mann ißt eine Banane.

The man eats a banana.

Die Frau ißt die Äpfel.

The woman eats the apples.

Der Mann ißt den Apfel.

Ißt der Mann den Apfel, dann ißt die Frau die Orange.
