Talking About the Weather
Use das Wetter to talk about the weather generally.
| The weather is very bad today. | Das Wetter ist heute sehr schlecht. |
The Impersonal "es"
Just like in English, German uses the impersonal pronoun es (it) as the subject for weather verbs like regnen (to rain) and schneien (to snow).
| It is raining outside. | Es regnet draußen. |
| It snows often and the snow is beautiful. | Es schneit oft und der Schnee ist schön. |
Describing Conditions with "es ist"
To describe temperatures and conditions, use es ist with adjectives like kalt (cold), warm (warm), kühl (cool), or windig (windy).
To say it is sunny, Germans typically say that the sun is shining (die Sonne scheint).
| It is warm and the sun is shining. | Es ist warm und die Sonne scheint. |
Remember: if you start a sentence with a time or location like draußen (outside), the conjugated verb stays in the second position. This pushes es to the third spot.
| Outside it is cool and windy. | Draußen ist es kühl und windig. |
Using "es gibt" for Weather
You can also use the impersonal phrase es gibt (there is / there are) with nouns like der Regen (the rain) or der Schnee (the snow).
| There is a lot of snow here. | Hier gibt es viel Schnee. |
| The weather is beautiful and there is no rain today. | Das Wetter ist schön und es gibt heute keinen Regen. |
