When transporting fragile cargo, careful planning is crucial.

Verbs with the prefixes durch-, über-, unter-, and um- are variable. Depending on the verb's meaning, the prefix can act as either separable or inseparable:
- Separable: The prefix moves to the end of a main clause. The meaning is usually literal or physical.
- Inseparable: The prefix stays firmly attached to the verb. The meaning is often abstract or figurative.
Running Over vs. Bypassing
Let's look at the verb umfahren. If you physically knock an object over with a vehicle, the prefix um- separates.

If you detour to drive around or bypass an obstacle, the prefix is inseparable.

Sheltering vs. Accusing
The verb unterstellen follows the same pattern. When separable, it has a literal, spatial meaning: to place something underneath, such as taking shelter.
| If it rains, we will shelter the cargo immediately. | Falls es regnet, stellen wir die Fracht sofort unter. |
When inseparable, the meaning becomes entirely abstract: to allege or accuse someone of something.
| Why are you accusing him of this mistake with the delivery? | Warum unterstellst du ihm diesen Fehler bei der Lieferung? |
Snapping in Half vs. Breaking Through
With durchbrechen, the separable version means something physically snaps in two.
| The fragile cargo breaks in half in the middle! | Die zerbrechliche Fracht bricht in der Mitte durch! |
The inseparable version implies forcefully crossing a boundary or penetrating a barrier.
| The truck suddenly breaks through the barrier. | Der Lastwagen durchbricht plötzlich die Absperrung. |
Context is Key
Other verbs follow similar patterns, such as übersetzen. When inseparable, it means "to translate." (When separable, it means "to ferry across" water).
| The boss is translating the permit for the route. | Der Chef übersetzt die Genehmigung für die Route. |
Whenever you encounter verbs with these prefixes, pay close attention to whether the prefix detaches—the sentence structure reveals which definition is intended!
