### The semi-modal construction "brauchen nicht zu"

To express that an action is unnecessary ("do not need to" or "do not have to"), German uses the verb **brauchen** (to need) with a negation and an infinitive clause.

The conjugated form of *brauchen* takes the usual second position. Place **nicht** later in the sentence, and anchor the very end with **zu** followed by the infinitive verb.

If negating a noun that takes an indefinite (or no) article, use a form of **kein** instead of *nicht*. 

### Separable verbs with "zu"

If the infinitive verb is separable, **zu** is squeezed directly between the prefix and the verb stem to form one continuous word (for example, *mit* + *zu* + *bringen* = *mitzubringen*).

### "brauchen nur zu" (only need to)

Replace the negation with **nur** (only) to express how easy or relaxing something is—you "only need to" do it.
