The semi-modal construction "brauchen nicht zu"

To express that an action is unnecessary ("do not need to" or "do not have to"), German uses the verb brauchen (to need) with a negation and an infinitive clause.

The conjugated form of brauchen takes the usual second position. Place nicht later in the sentence, and anchor the very end with zu followed by the infinitive verb.

If negating a noun that takes an indefinite (or no) article, use a form of kein instead of nicht.

Separable verbs with "zu"

If the infinitive verb is separable, zu is squeezed directly between the prefix and the verb stem to form one continuous word (for example, mit + zu + bringen = mitzubringen).

"brauchen nur zu" (only need to)

Replace the negation with nur (only) to express how easy or relaxing something is—you "only need to" do it.

If the action involves a reflexive verb (like sich entspannen or sich wohlfühlen), the reflexive pronoun usually appears shortly after the conjugated brauchen.
