The double infinitive construction
To form the Present Perfect (Perfekt) of a regular verb, you use a helping verb and a past participle (like gemacht). When a modal verb (like müssen, können, or wollen) is paired with a main verb, however, German uses the double infinitive construction.
Instead of a past participle, the sentence ends with the infinitive form of the main verb directly followed by the infinitive form of the modal verb. The conjugated helping verb is always haben.
In a standard main clause, haben takes the second position, and the two infinitives are pushed to the very end of the sentence.
| We had to cancel the meeting because I urgently had to go on a business trip. | Wir haben das Treffen absagen müssen, denn ich habe dringend eine Geschäftsreise machen müssen. |
| Did you really have to go on this business trip even though you are sick? | Hast du diese Geschäftsreise wirklich machen müssen, obwohl du krank bist? |
Giving excuses with stattdessen
This construction is useful for explaining why plans fell through or what you had to do instead.
To contrast your plans, you can use the adverb stattdessen (instead). Notice how coordinating conjunctions like denn (because), aber (but), or sondern (but rather) keep the standard main clause word order.
| I was not allowed to go to the cinema, but had to do the housework instead. | Ich habe nicht ins Kino gehen dürfen, sondern habe stattdessen die Hausarbeit machen müssen. |
| We couldn't rest because we had to finish the housework instead. | Wir haben uns nicht ausruhen können, denn wir haben stattdessen die Hausarbeit abschließen müssen. |
Other modal verbs
The double infinitive rule applies to all modal verbs, including wollen (to want), können (to be able to), and dürfen (to be allowed to). The pattern remains identical: haben takes the second position, with the main verb and the modal verb at the end.
| I wanted to do my duty, but I urgently had to leave. | Ich habe meine Pflicht tun wollen, aber ich habe dringend gehen müssen. |
| We wanted to help, but we had to take over the housework. | Wir haben helfen wollen, aber wir haben die Hausarbeit übernehmen müssen. |
