The Subordinating Conjunction "obwohl"
To express a contradiction or concession—saying that something is happening although or even though something else is true—use the conjunction obwohl.
Because obwohl is a subordinating conjunction, it introduces a dependent clause. This means the conjugated verb gets pushed to the very end of that clause. Always separate the main clause and the obwohl clause with a comma.
| I am still awake although it is already late. | Ich bin noch wach, obwohl es schon spät ist. |
| I am eating the vegetables although I am already full. | Ich esse das Gemüse, obwohl ich schon satt bin. |
| I am visiting him although he is sick. | Ich besuche ihn, obwohl er krank ist. |
Starting the Sentence with "obwohl"
You can also flip the order and start the sentence with the obwohl clause. The verb in the dependent clause stays at the very end.
However, because the entire obwohl clause now occupies the first position of the sentence, the main clause must start with its verb right after the comma. This keeps the main verb in the second position overall.
