Action vs. State: Placement and Location
In English, you can "put" almost anything anywhere, and say it "is" there. German uses different verbs depending on an object's physical shape, and whether you are performing an action (placing it) or describing a state (it resting there).
Because placing an object involves movement toward a destination, it requires the accusative case. Once the object is resting there, it becomes a static location, which triggers the dative case.
Stellen vs. Stehen (Upright Objects)
For objects that have a natural base and stand upright—like a TV, a vase, or a lamp—use stellen (to place upright) and stehen (to stand).
- stellen
- accusative (action)
- stehen
- dative (state)
| I am putting the TV in the living room. | Ich stelle den Fernseher in das Wohnzimmer. |
| Now this TV is in the living room. | Jetzt steht dieser Fernseher im Wohnzimmer. |
Notice how the destination in das (accusative) changes to the location im (short for in dem, dative) once the TV is in place.
| Can you put the lamp on the desk? | Kannst du die Lampe auf den Schreibtisch stellen? |
| The lamp is already on the desk. | Die Lampe steht schon auf dem Schreibtisch. |
Legen vs. Liegen (Flat Objects)
For flat objects without an obvious base, like documents or notebooks, use legen (to lay down) and liegen (to lie flat).
- legen
- accusative (action)
- liegen
- dative (state)
| We are putting the document in the middle. | Wir legen das Dokument in die Mitte. |
| The document is in the middle. | Das Dokument liegt in der Mitte. |
| Are you putting the notebook next to the document? | Legst du das Heft neben das Dokument? |
| No, the notebook is already there. The desk is full. | Nein, das Heft liegt schon da. Der Schreibtisch ist voll. |
Setzen vs. Sitzen (Seating)
Finally, when dealing with living things or a seated posture, use setzen (to seat someone) and sitzen (to be seated).
- setzen
- accusative (action)
- sitzen
- dative (state)
| I am putting the baby in the armchair. | Ich setze das Baby in den Sessel. |
| The baby is sitting in the armchair. It is very comfortable. | Das Baby sitzt im Sessel. Er ist sehr bequem. |
