Past passive with modals (musste ... werden)

The Past Passive with Modal Verbs

In emergency situations, you often need to describe urgent necessities or abilities in the past—things that had to be done or could be saved. To express this, combine the passive voice with a modal verb in the simple past (Präteritum).

The structure follows a strict word order:

  • The conjugated modal verb in the simple past (musste, konnte, or durfte) takes Position 2.
  • The action is formed with a Past Participle + werden, stacked at the very end of the sentence.
The injured dog had to be brought to the veterinary clinic immediately.
Der verletzte Hund musste sofort in die Tierklinik gebracht werden.

Notice how musste sits in Position 2, while gebracht werden waits at the end.

The restless patient had to be calmed down.
Der unruhige Patient musste beruhigt werden.

If a dependent clause starts the sentence, the main clause begins with the conjugated modal verb:

Because the kitten was in mortal danger, action had to be taken quickly.
Weil das Kätzchen in Lebensgefahr war, musste schnell gehandelt werden.

Other Modal Verbs

This structure works for any modal verb. Use durfte nicht to express a strict prohibition in the past ("was not allowed to be"):

The tired surgeon was not allowed to be disturbed during the work.
Der müde Chirurg durfte während der Arbeit nicht gestört werden.
During the anesthesia, the patient was not allowed to be woken up.
Während der Narkose durfte der Patient nicht geweckt werden.

Similarly, use konnte for ability or possibility ("could be"):

Fortunately, the bleeding could be stopped immediately.
Die Blutung konnte zum Glück sofort gestoppt werden.

Combine these modals with the past passive to vividly recount the critical moments of any intense situation:

The situation was critical and the bleeding had to be stopped immediately.
Die Situation war kritisch und die Blutung musste sofort gestoppt werden.
