Stating Exceptions with "abgesehen von"

To state an exception—saying "apart from" or "aside from"—use the phrase abgesehen von. Because the preposition von always triggers the Dative case, the noun that follows must take a Dative article:

• Masculine and Neuter: der and das become dem
• Feminine: die becomes der
• Plural: die becomes den (and the noun usually adds an -n)

For a feminine noun like die Vorgabe (the specification), the article becomes der:

For a neuter noun like das Logo, the article becomes dem:

The Contraction "vom"

With masculine or neuter nouns, the words von + dem are frequently contracted into vom.
