Conditional and final phrases (bei, zu)

Condensing Conditional Clauses with "Bei"

In technical instructions like factory safety protocols, conditional clauses (wenn) are often shortened into compact prepositional phrases using bei (in the event of / during).

Bei requires the Dative case.

Note: bei + dem usually contracts into beim.

In the event of a defect, the employee must press the emergency stop.
Bei einem Defekt muss der Mitarbeiter den Notstopp betätigen.
During maintenance, a precise inspection of the machine is important.
Bei der Wartung ist eine genaue Überprüfung der Maschine wichtig.
When the conveyor belt comes to a standstill, maintenance begins.
Bei einem Stillstand des Förderbandes beginnt die Wartung.

Expressing Purpose with "Zu"

Similarly, clauses expressing a purpose (damit or um ... zu) can be condensed using the preposition zu (for / to). Like bei, zu requires the Dative case.

These purpose phrases typically use definite articles, which contract with the preposition:

  • zu + dem = zum (Masculine / Neuter, e.g., zum Schutz)
  • zu + der = zur (Feminine)

Tip: Formal action nouns ending in -ung (like Vermeidung or Überprüfung) are always feminine, so they pair with zur.

To protect the employees and avoid accidents, you must observe these rules.
Zum Schutz der Mitarbeiter und zur Vermeidung von Unfällen müssen Sie diese Regeln beachten.
To avoid an accident, you must press the emergency stop.
Zur Vermeidung eines Unfalls müssen Sie den Notstopp betätigen.

You can combine both concepts into a single instruction, stating the purpose (zu) and the condition (bei) compactly:

To inspect the components, turn off the machine if there is a defect.
Zur Überprüfung der Bauteile schalten Sie bei einem Defekt die Maschine aus.
