Les gosses jouent dans la rue.

From Lesson 284:Informal French·French

Questions & Answers about Les gosses jouent dans la rue.

Is gosses just a standard word for children?
Gosses is a very common informal word for kids or children in France. However, be careful: in Quebec French, gosses is slang for a part of the male anatomy, so it is highly recommended to stick to enfants if you are traveling to Canada!
Why do we say dans la rue instead of sur la rue (on the street)?
In French, you use dans (in) because you are considered to be physically inside the 3D space of the street, surrounded by buildings. You would generally only use sur (on) when pointing out a location on a map, such as a bakery located sur la rue principale.
How is the verb jouent pronounced here?
The -ent ending for the third-person plural of verbs is completely silent in French. You pronounce jouent exactly the same as the singular joue. It is a common habit for learners to try to sound out the ending, but resist the temptation!
