Questions & Answers about Ce que je préfère, c'est la saveur acide.
Why do we use ce que here instead of ce qui?
We use ce que because it acts as the direct object of the verb préfère. You are saying 'the thing THAT I prefer.' Since je is the subject doing the preferring, ce que is the object receiving the action. You would use ce qui if it were the subject of the action, like in ce qui est bon (what is good).
Why do we say c'est la saveur instead of just est la saveur?
When you start a sentence with ce que or ce qui to emphasize something, French requires you to use c'est (or ce sont) to introduce the second half of the sentence. It literally translates to 'What I prefer, it is the sour flavor.' This structure is standard and sounds much more natural in French than just using est.
Does acide mean 'sour' or 'acidic'?
It means both! While you might recognize it as 'acidic' from science class, in the everyday context of food and drink, acide is the standard French word for the 'sour' taste, like you get from lemons or certain candies.
Why is there an accent change in préfère compared to the infinitive préférer?
