Asking "which" or "what" with quel
To ask "which" or "what" about a specific noun, use the interrogative adjective quel. It must agree in gender and number with the noun it describes. All four forms are pronounced exactly the same!
| Singular | Plural | |
|---|---|---|
| Masculine | quel | quels |
| Feminine | quelle | quelles |
Use quel for masculine singular nouns and quelle for feminine singular nouns:
| Which coat do you want? | Quel manteau est-ce que vous voulez ? |
| Which shirt does he want to try on? | Quelle chemise est-ce qu'il veut essayer ? |
For plural nouns, add an -s (quels or quelles):
| Which clothes do you want to try on? | Quels vêtements est-ce que tu veux essayer ? |
| Which dresses are you buying? | Quelles robes est-ce que vous achetez ? |
You can also use quel directly before the verb être (to be) to ask "What is..." or "What are...". It still matches the gender and number of the noun you are asking about:
| What size is this dress? | Quelle est la taille de cette robe ? |
