Subjunctive for emotions (être content que, avoir peur que)

In French, the subjunctive mood isn't just used for necessity or obligation. You must also use it after expressions of emotion and feeling, such as being happy, sad, or afraid about what someone else is doing.

Être content que & Avoir peur que

When you express a feeling followed by que (that), the verb for the action you are reacting to must be in the subjunctive.

Use être content que (to be happy that) to react positively, and avoir peur que (to be afraid that) to express your fears. Remember that que becomes qu' before a word starting with a vowel.

I am happy that they are starting the construction site.
Je suis content qu'ils commencent le chantier.
We are afraid that the project will destroy the forest.
Nous avons peur que le projet détruise la forêt.

As a reminder, to form the subjunctive, take the present tense ils form of the verb, drop the -ent, and add the regular subjunctive endings (-e, -es, -e, -ions, -iez, -ent). Because of this rule, the subjunctive often sounds exactly like the present tense.

They are destroying the parking lot, and I am happy that they are planting trees.
Ils détruisent le parking, et je suis content qu'ils plantent des arbres.
I am afraid that the local shop will close.
J'ai peur que le commerce local ferme.

Other Emotions

All expressions of emotion follow this exact same rule, including être triste que (to be sad that).

We are sad that they are building a highway near the daycare.
Nous sommes tristes qu'ils construisent une autoroute près de la crèche.

Whether dealing with a regular -ir verb (like finir) or a regular -er verb (like planter), simply attach the subjunctive ending to that present-tense ils stem.

They are going to develop the zone in a month, and we are happy that they are finishing this project.
Ils vont aménager la zone dans un mois, et nous sommes contents qu'ils finissent ce projet.
I am happy that the city is planting flowers in front of the daycare.
Je suis content que la ville plante des fleurs devant la crèche.
