When you want to offer a small, low-stakes reason to try something, use the phrase **ne serait-ce que** (if only to / were it only for). It introduces a restrictive minimum condition.

### A Fixed Phrase

**Ne serait-ce que** is an invariable expression. Even though it contains the conditional verb *serait*, it never changes form. You will frequently see it followed by **pour** + an infinitive verb to mean "if only *to* [do something]".

### Using Nouns

You can also follow **ne serait-ce que** with a noun. Depending on the context, use **pour** + noun ("if only *for*...") or just the noun directly.
