Reported yes or no questions (il demande si)

Reported Yes/No Questions

To report a yes/no question, connect the introductory phrase to the question using si (if / whether).

Just like in English, the reported question drops the question mark and uses standard statement word order, getting rid of any inversion or est-ce que from the original direct quote.

The manager asks if you have the right profile.
Le responsable demande si vous avez le bon profil.

Interview Inquiries

This structure is very common in professional settings, like reporting what a manager asks during a job interview. Because the introductory verb demander (to ask) is in the present tense here, the tense of the reported question doesn't change from the original quote.

The boss asks if the bilingual candidate is available.
Le chef demande si le candidat bilingue est disponible.
She asks if the position requires a new skill.
Elle demande si le poste exige une nouvelle compétence.
The boss asks if this skill is an asset.
Le chef demande si cette compétence est un atout.
He asks if you have good references.
Il demande si vous avez de bonnes références.
He asks if the resume indicates the qualification and the reference.
Il demande si le CV indique la qualification et la référence.
