Reported Wh- Questions
To report an open-ended question, use the question word—like quand (when), où (where), or pourquoi (why)—to connect the introductory phrase to the reported statement.
Use standard word order, dropping the question mark and removing any inversion or est-ce que from the original quote.
| The operator asks when you received the order. | L'opérateur demande quand vous avez reçu la commande. |
| The store offers an exchange and asks where you live. | Le magasin offre un échange et demande où vous habitez. |
| He asks why the phone no longer functions. | Il demande pourquoi le téléphone ne fonctionne plus. |
You can also follow the question word directly with an infinitive verb:
| The agent asks where to send the refund. | L'agent demande où envoyer le remboursement. |
