Proportional comparisons (plus... plus...)

"The More... The More..."

To express "the more... the more...", French uses the parallel structure plus... plus....

Unlike English, French does not use a definite article ("the") in this construction. You simply start the clause with plus, followed directly by the normal subject and verb.

The more you study grammar, the more you master the language.
Plus tu étudies la grammaire, plus tu maîtrises la langue.
The more you read, the more you memorize the vocabulary.
Plus vous lisez, plus vous mémorisez le vocabulaire.

You can also add adverbs to describe how an action is performed.

The more you listen to this dialogue, the more fluently you speak.
Plus tu écoutes ce dialogue, plus tu parles couramment.

"The Less... The Less..."

To say "the less... the less...", use the exact same structure with moins... moins....

The less we practice pronunciation, the less natural our accent is.
Moins on pratique la prononciation, moins notre accent est naturel.

Mixing "Plus" and "Moins"

You can combine plus and moins in the same sentence to say "the more... the less..." (or vice versa).

When comparing amounts of a noun (like vocabulary or mistakes), remember to use de (e.g., plus de, moins d'), just as you would in standard sentences.

The more vocabulary you memorize, the fewer mistakes you make.
Plus tu mémorises de vocabulaire, moins tu fais d'erreurs.

Saying "The Better"

If you want to say "the better" as a proportional comparison, use mieux. It sits at the beginning of the clause exactly like plus and moins.

The more you master grammar, the better you write.
Plus vous maîtrisez la grammaire, mieux vous écrivez.
