Professional roles (en tant que)

To express the role, status, or capacity in which someone is acting, use the phrase en tant que ("as" or "in the capacity of").

Dropping the Article

In English, we usually include an article when stating a profession or role ("as a mentor"). In French, when you use en tant que to state someone's role, you must drop the article (un, une, le, or la) completely. Use just en tant que followed directly by the noun.

He acts as a mentor in this position.
Il agit en tant que mentor dans cette fonction.
As a tutor, he supervised the students for a month.
En tant que tuteur, il a encadré les étudiants pendant un mois.

Elision with Vowels

If the profession or role starts with a vowel or a silent h, the que in en tant que contracts to qu'.

The delegate speaks as an elected official.
Le délégué parle en tant qu'élu.

Additional Roles

You can use this structure to discuss all kinds of civic duties, mentorship positions, or professional functions.

He said that he worked as a mediator.
Il a dit qu'il travaillait en tant que médiateur.
As a trainer, you must supervise the team.
En tant que formateur, vous devez encadrer l'équipe.
