To talk about how a different choice in the past would affect your life right now, use a mixed conditional.
Forming mixed conditionals
A mixed conditional connects a hypothetical past condition to a present result. It combines two familiar tenses:
- The condition (the "if" clause) describes a past event that didn't happen. Use si
- the plus-que-parfait.
- The result clause describes the present situation. Use the conditionnel présent.
Si + plus-que-parfait -> conditionnel présent
| If I had chosen another profession, my current salary would be better. | Si j'avais choisi une autre profession, mon salaire actuel serait meilleur. |
| If she had studied finance, she would no longer be unemployed today. | Si elle avait étudié la finance, elle ne serait plus au chômage aujourd'hui. |
| If I had studied art, I would be a photographer today. | Si j'avais étudié l'art, je serais photographe aujourd'hui. |
The conditions (choosing a profession, studying art) are firmly in the past, but the results (having a better salary, being a photographer) are happening today.
Changing the clause order
You can also reverse the clause order. When the si clause comes second, drop the comma.
| I would work in finance if I had accepted their proposal. | Je travaillerais dans la finance si j'avais accepté leur proposition. |
| Your current profession would please you less if you had not made this choice. | Ta profession actuelle te plairait moins si tu n'avais pas fait ce choix. |
Discussing lifestyle and fulfillment
Mixed conditionals are perfect for reflecting on how past choices have shaped your current well-being, freedom, or sense of fulfillment.
| If you had traveled, you would be much more fulfilled today. | Si tu avais voyagé, tu serais beaucoup plus épanoui aujourd'hui. |
| If he had changed his status, he would feel freer. | S'il avait changé son statut, il se sentirait plus libre. |
