Starting Sentences with "Comme"
While parce que ("because") usually connects two ideas in the middle of a sentence, use comme (since / as) to state the cause at the very beginning of your sentence.
| since / as (giving a reason) | comme |
| Since it is your turn, you must move the pawn. |
| Since he rolled the die, it is my turn. | Comme il a lancé le dé, c'est mon tour. |
Chance and Strategy
Whether a game relies on le hasard (chance) or la stratégie (strategy), you can use comme to explain your play style.
| Since I do not like chance, I prefer strategy. |
You will also need to know the word for the board itself, le plateau:
| Now, you move the pawn on the board. |
Drawing Cards and Betting
Card games and casino games are often played in rounds (la manche). During a round, you might draw a card (piocher) or bet (parier) using tokens (le jeton).
| Since the round is beginning, you draw a card. |
| Since nobody is betting, the round is over. |
You can also use these game terms in standard sentences without comme:
| He bet three tokens during the last round. |
