Intensity with nouns (tellement de... que)

Surviving the Sales

When massive store sales (les soldes) hit, the crowds and discounts can bring enormous chaos. Before we talk about the consequences of these crowds, let's look at the madness of shopping season.

There is enormous chaos in the store.
Il y a un chaos énorme dans le magasin.
The shoppers shove everyone, it's chaos!
Les acheteurs bousculent tout le monde, c'est le chaos !
The discounts are huge, it's madness!
Les réductions sont énormes, c'est la folie !

So Much and So Many: tellement de... que

In a previous lesson, you learned to use si or tellement to say something is "so [adjective] that..."

When you want to describe an overwhelming quantity of a noun (so much or so many of a thing), you must add de after tellement. Place tellement de before the noun, and que before the consequence.

(Note: *de and que become d' and qu' before a vowel or silent h!)*

There are so many shoppers during the sales that it's unbearable.
Il y a tellement d'acheteurs pendant les soldes que c'est insupportable.
They buy so much merchandise that they have no more money.
Ils achètent tellement de marchandise qu'ils n'ont plus d'argent.
There is so much chaos that the noise is unbearable.
Il y a tellement de chaos que le bruit est insupportable.

Using tant de... que

You can also use tant de instead of tellement de. It works exactly the same way and means the exact same thing: "so much" or "so many".

There are so many shopping carts that it's madness.
Il y a tant de chariots que c'est la folie.
The customers shove so many people that I am leaving.
Les clients bousculent tant de gens que je pars.
