Conditional gerunds

Instead of using a traditional si (if) clause, you can express conditions dynamically with the gérondif (gerund).

Formed with en plus the present participle (which usually ends in -ant), the gérondif translates to "by [doing something]." It is an action-oriented structure often used when coaching or giving productivity advice.

By prioritizing your tasks, you increase your output.
En hiérarchisant tes tâches, tu augmentes ton rendement.
By dividing your work, you avoid procrastination.
En divisant votre travail, vous évitez la procrastination.
By using her planner, she is more systematic.
En utilisant son agenda, elle est plus systématique.

You can place the gérondif at the beginning of the sentence to set up the condition immediately, or later in the sentence to focus first on the outcome.

Before starting, you save time by prioritizing these projects.
Avant de commencer, tu gagnes du temps en hiérarchisant ces projets.
Instead of sleeping, you finish the project by timing each task.
Au lieu de dormir, tu finis le projet en chronométrant chaque tâche.
