"During" an event or season
In French, the preposition pendant describes an action that happens within a specific, closed timeframe. It often translates to "during" an event, season, or trip.
| We leave for the mountains during the winter. | Nous partons à la montagne pendant l'hiver. |
| I worked here during my stay. | J'ai travaillé ici pendant mon séjour. |
"For" a set period of time
Unlike depuis (used for ongoing actions), pendant expresses that an action happens "for" a defined, completed block of time.
| We are sleeping in an old cabin for a week. | Nous dormons dans un vieux chalet pendant une semaine. |
Winter getaways
This lesson also introduces vocabulary for winter sports and seasonal trips, such as la neige (snow), une piste (slope), une luge (sled), and un gant (glove).
| The child played with a sled during our stay. | L'enfant a joué avec une luge pendant notre séjour. |
| Where did you hide the sled and the gloves? | Où est-ce que tu as caché la luge et les gants ? |
