Avoiding Repetition with "Que"
When you link two clauses that share the same subordinating conjunction (like "When X happens and when Y happens"), repeating the conjunction sounds clunky. Instead of repeating it in the second clause, use que.
Pattern: Quand [first clause] et que [second clause]
| When you reduce your consumption and you do not waste energy, it makes the world better. | Quand tu réduis ta consommation et que tu ne gaspilles pas l'énergie, ça rend le monde meilleur. |
This applies to any tense:
| When fossil energy has disappeared and the nuclear plant has closed, it will be wonderful. | Quand l'énergie fossile aura disparu et que l'usine nucléaire aura fermé, ce sera formidable. |
Using "Que" with "Comme" and "Lorsque"
This rule also applies to other subordinating conjunctions like comme (since/as) and lorsque (when).
| Since waste costs a lot and we want an alternative, we are changing this system. | Comme le gaspillage coûte cher et que nous voulons une alternative, nous changeons ce système. |
| Since the wind is inexhaustible and this wind turbine works well, it produces a lot. | Comme le vent est inépuisable et que cette éolienne fonctionne bien, elle produit beaucoup. |
Remember that que contracts to qu' before a vowel or mute h:
| When we stop waste and we install a wind turbine, we make progress. | Lorsqu'on arrête le gaspillage et qu'on installe une éolienne, on fait des progrès. |
