Alternative conjunctions (soit... soit...)

In chess (les échecs), you constantly make tactical decisions and choose between mutually exclusive paths.

Presenting alternatives: "soit... soit..."

To express "either... or..." in French, use the paired conjunction soit... soit.... Place it directly before the elements you are contrasting, such as two nouns:

To win at chess, you must anticipate either the attack or the defense.

Connecting full clauses

You can also use soit... soit... to frame two distinct actions or independent clauses.

Either you control the center of the chessboard, or you lose the game.
In chess, either we attack the center, or we defend.

Tactical sacrifices

This "either/or" structure is perfect for describing tactical dilemmas on the chessboard (l'échiquier), like deciding whether to sacrifice (sacrifier) a piece or threaten (menacer) a position.

Either I sacrifice a pawn, or I ruin my position.
On the chessboard, either you threaten the center, or you sacrifice the knight.
