Alternative conditions (selon que, suivant que)

In French, to express that a situation changes based on different scenarios ("depending on whether... or..."), use selon que or suivant que.

These expressions are interchangeable and are always followed by the indicative mood (standard tenses like the present), never the subjunctive. They are typically followed by two distinct options linked by ou (or), or simply by ou non (or not).

The freight price fluctuates depending on whether you ship today or tomorrow.
The carrier chooses the sea or air route depending on whether the package is urgent or not.

Notice how these expressions seamlessly connect the main outcome (like the timeframe or price) to the chosen method of transport:

The timeframe changes depending on whether the carrier uses the land or sea network.
The price changes depending on whether you ship the merchandise by sea or land.
