Accent stem changes (é to è)
Just like verbs that change an unaccented e to an è, some verbs that have an acute accent (é) in their stem change it to a grave accent (è) in the present tense.
This spelling change happens for all pronouns except nous and vous, which keep the original é. Here is the conjugation for espérer (to hope):
| Pronoun | Form |
|---|---|
| je | j'espère |
| tu | tu espères |
| il / elle / on | il espère |
| nous | nous espérons |
| vous | vous espérez |
| ils / elles | ils espèrent |
To say "I hope that...", use que (that) to introduce the next part of your sentence.
| I hope you are successful. | J'espère que tu as du succès. |
| We hope that the teacher repeats the sentence. | Nous espérons que le professeur répète la phrase. |
This pattern applies to several other common verbs, such as répéter (to repeat), compléter (to complete), célébrer (to celebrate), exagérer (to exaggerate), and protéger (to protect).
Notice how the nous and vous forms keep the é, while the other pronouns change the accent to è:
| You always repeat the same thing. | Vous répétez toujours la même chose. |
| He always repeats the same word. | Il répète toujours le même mot. |
| You complete this document. | Tu complètes ce document. |
| You exaggerate a lot! | Tu exagères beaucoup ! |
| They celebrate the success of the project. | Elles célèbrent le succès du projet. |
| She protects our planet. | Elle protège notre planète. |
