Questions & Answers about Kuningatar halusi valtaistuimen. Hän syrjäytti kuninkaan salamurhan avulla.
Why is hän used here instead of tämä to mean "she"?
In Finnish, when connecting sequential sentences, hän refers back to the subject of the previous sentence (here, kuningatar). If the second sentence used tämä (this one), it would typically refer to the most recently mentioned noun or the object of the previous sentence. Because the queen is the subject of the first sentence, hän keeps the narrative focus on her.
The word syrjäytti means "deposed". How is this word formed?
It is derived from the noun syrjä, which means "edge" or "margin". The transitive verb syrjäyttää literally means to push someone or something to the edge or cast them aside. In a political context like this one, it is the standard way to say "depose", "oust", or "sideline".
Why do both valtaistuimen and kuninkaan end in -n?
They are both total objects of their respective verbs (halusi and syrjäytti). Because these are affirmative actions that are completed or target whole entities (she wanted the whole throne, she completely deposed the king), the object takes the singular accusative case. For singular nouns, the accusative ending is -n, making it look identical to the genitive case.
How does the phrase salamurhan avulla translate to "with the help of an assassination"?
