Why is the first part of koirankoppi in the genitive case (koiran) instead of the nominative (koira)?
This relates to the compound noun rule for purpose or target. When the first word indicates who or what the second word is meant for, it usually takes the genitive case. Since the hut (koppi) is intended for a dog (koira), we use the genitive koiran.
What is the exact meaning of the word koppi here, and why wouldn't we use talo?
Koppi refers to a small cabin, booth, or hut. A talo is a full-sized house, so a koirantalo would sound comical, like a literal human-style house built for a dog. A doghouse or kennel is therefore always a koirankoppi.
The English translation says 'in the yard', but pihalla uses the adessive case (-lla) which normally means 'on'. Why?
In Finnish, certain outdoor areas and open spaces take the outer local cases like the adessive. Piha (yard) is one of these standard exceptions where you must use the -lla ending instead of the inessive -ssa to say you are in that area.
