Questions & Answers about Teidän täytyy panna otsalamppu päähän ja kiinnittää selkäsuoja.
Why are otsalamppu (headlamp) and selkäsuoja (back protector) in the singular when the English translation uses the plural?
This is the "distributive singular." Because the subject is plural (Teidän, "you all") but each person is only putting on exactly one headlamp and one back protector, Finnish strongly prefers the singular form. It highlights the "one per person" reality, whereas English simply matches the plural subject and says "headlamps."
Does the distributive singular rule also apply to päähän (into the head)?
Yes! Just like the gear, each person has exactly one head. So instead of putting the headlamps into "heads" (plural), Finnish keeps it distributive and says you put them päähän (singular illative).
Why are the objects otsalamppu and selkäsuoja in the basic nominative form, rather than taking the -n ending?
They are the objects of a necessity verb phrase (täytyy). A major rule in Finnish is that when a sentence uses a verb of obligation like täytyy, pitää, or kannattaa, its total object is put in the nominative form (without the -n ending) rather than the standard genitive-accusative.
Why does putting "on" a headlamp use the illative case päähän (into the head)?
